How to request it?
At Profamilia, we offer a comprehensive safe abortion program so that every person can make free, safe, and informed decisions. Whatever your decision — continuing the pregnancy, terminating it, or receiving counseling for adoption — we are here to support you.
We have a safe abortion care pathway:
Psychological counseling:
Our psychology professionals provide personalized guidance. They explain the legal framework of abortion in Colombia under Ruling C-055 of 2022, which decriminalized abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, and Ruling C-355 of 2006, which allows access to the procedure after 24 weeks under three specific circumstances. The session includes information about the regulations according to the stage of pregnancy, the procedure itself, and the associated risk factors.
General medicine:
After counseling, if the woman decides to continue with the safe abortion process, she will be referred to a medical professional to perform the most appropriate procedure.
Post-abortion check-up:
As part of the comprehensive care program, each person can optionally attend a post-abortion check-up five to fifteen days after the procedure. This includes counseling on contraceptive methods to ensure safe continuation of their sexual life.
Remember:
-
At Profamilia, we perform safe abortions at any gestational age, in accordance with current regulations.
-
We do not require additional documentation beyond what is legally necessary.
-
We do not convene medical boards to determine case validity.
-
Our services ensure that the entire process is carried out as quickly as possible, without unjustified delays, and with humane and high-quality care.

Where to request it?
Any woman or pregnant person can access an abortion without restrictions up to the 24th week of pregnancy (Ruling C-055 of 2022). After that period, they must meet one of the three grounds established by the Constitutional Court of Colombia (Ruling C-355 of 2006).
They only need to express their decision voluntarily to their trusted EPS or IPS (healthcare provider).
Can I request a safe abortion through my EPS?
By law, Health Promotion Entities (EPS) and Health Service Institutions (IPS) — whether part of the contributory or subsidized system — are obligated to comply with the decision of the Constitutional Court.
It is illegal for EPS to create administrative barriers to performing safe abortions, such as requiring unnecessary documentation to prove eligibility. Likewise, EPS must not delay or extend the process, as doing so could endanger the woman’s life or health. Requiring, for example, parental authorization to perform an abortion constitutes a violation of the right to privacy and autonomy.
At Profamilia, we have agreements with various EPS across the country to make access to safe abortion services easier.
We provide support and safe abortion care in 24 cities nationwide.
Health service providers must:
- Provide clear, sufficient, and appropriate information about the available options regarding pregnancy, and have qualified and adequate healthcare professionals to attend to all requests for safe abortion services.
- Have rapid diagnostic protocols in place for identifying the causes that justify voluntary termination of pregnancy or safe abortion.
- Ensure timely care, preferably within five days following the abortion request.
- Explain any legal requirements related to the provision of the service.
- Offer a comprehensive, high-quality, and safe service, in line with the highest medical standards.
- Respect free and informed consent for any procedure.
- Guarantee confidentiality and respect the rights to privacy, autonomy, and dignity.
- Provide pre- and post-procedure counseling, including access to effective contraceptive methods and prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
Health service providers must not:
- Judge, blame, or make accusatory comments, or engage in any behavior that demeans or discriminates against the patient.
- Deny the performance of a voluntary termination of pregnancy (safe abortion) when the case falls under one of the legal grounds established by law.
- Create administrative barriers (such as convening medical boards, requesting audits, creating waiting lists, or adding unnecessary procedures) or demand additional requirements not established by law, such as forensic examinations, the aggressor’s conviction in cases of rape, parental or partner consent, or a judicial authorization.
- Disregard psychological assessments provided by mental health professionals.
- Prevent girls under 14 years of age from giving their own consent to undergo a voluntary termination of pregnancy or safe abortion.
- Disclose personal information to third parties without authorization.
- Refuse to issue the medical certification.
- If a healthcare institution fails to provide the necessary care, the case can be reported to the Municipal Ombudsman’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office, the Health Secretariat, the National Health Superintendence, or even the Office of the Attorney General.
Profamilia offers Mía, a platform that provides access to comprehensive telemedicine-based health services for safe abortion, available up to the 12th week of pregnancy, with coverage across all of Colombia.
