What is it?
Tubal ligation is a minimally invasive, outpatient surgery with a quick recovery that lasts about 10 minutes. It involves cauterizing the fallopian tubes to prevent the egg from reaching the uterus. It is used as a permanent contraceptive method for women who do not wish to have children or who have already had the number of children they wanted.
The procedure is performed through laparoscopy, meaning it does not leave large scars and helps reduce recovery time and postoperative pain. Although it is considered a permanent method, it can be reversed through a surgical procedure called tubal recanalization.
Fun fact!
- Profamilia performed the first laparoscopic tubal ligation in Colombia in 1973 and is the organization with the longest track record and greatest expertise in this procedure.
