What are they?
It is a modern contraceptive method that can last between three to five years, depending on the type of implant chosen. It consists of one or two small, thin rods about the size of a matchstick, which are inserted under the skin of the upper arm and release a hormone called progestin. This hormone thickens the cervical mucus, preventing sperm from reaching the egg and reducing the frequency of ovulation.
It is a highly effective method, offering 99.5% contraceptive protection. Since it does not contain estrogen, it can be used by women who are breastfeeding or by those for whom estrogen use is contraindicated.
No replacement is needed during its effective period, making it an easy and practical option, as it does not require any ongoing action for it to work.
