Mitos y realidades

There are many myths surrounding abortion. The lack of clear, responsible, timely, and safe information is the main risk factor for women facing the decision of whether or not to continue a pregnancy.

Do women become infertile after an abortion?

No. Abortion procedures are safe and effective when performed correctly in a responsible and high-quality institution like Profamilia. Women retain their reproductive organs in perfect condition.

Is abortion always dangerous for women?

No. Abortion is a safe procedure as long as it is performed by properly trained healthcare professionals. An abortion carried out during the early months of pregnancy is simple and safe. In countries where abortion is legal, the risk of death is less than one woman per 100,000 abortions, while in countries where it is illegal, that number rises to 70 women per 100,000 procedures.

Is legal and safe abortion only performed in emergencies?

No. Services must be available whether or not the situation is considered a medical emergency, as long as the case meets one of the three legal grounds established in Colombian law. Departments and municipalities are required to ensure sufficient availability of services within the public health network so that access to abortion is real and care is provided promptly.

Does abortion cause psychological disorders in women who undergo it?

No. Denying a safe abortion to a woman who meets one of the three legal grounds does have negative consequences for her mental health and reduces her overall quality of life. The illegality, secrecy, loneliness, and silence surrounding abortions in Colombia are the main causes of suffering and/or guilt for some women.

Do adolescents have the right to request an abortion?

Yes. Any woman, regardless of age, can access the healthcare system and exercise her right to a safe abortion without facing any obstacles, as long as her case falls within one of the three legal grounds.

Are women, including adolescents, who have abortions irresponsible or selfish?

No. Women who decide to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy do so after reflecting deeply on their abilities, desires, and circumstances — concluding that at that moment, conditions are not suitable to continue the pregnancy.

Is there a gestational limit for having an abortion?

There is no time limit for performing an abortion procedure. However, after 12 weeks of pregnancy, the safety rate slightly decreases from 99.5% to 99%. Therefore, if a woman decides to have an abortion, it is better to do so in the earliest stages of pregnancy.

Profamilia offers Mía, a telemedicine platform that provides access to comprehensive safe abortion services up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, with nationwide coverage across Colombia.
