When to request it?

The use of contraceptive methods should be considered from the moment a person decides to begin their sexual life or at any point during it. A contraception and family planning consultation should be scheduled to choose the method that best fits each individual’s needs.

It’s important to keep in mind that Colombia’s Mandatory Health Plan (POS) includes several family planning method options.

Keep in mind

  • It’s true that not all injectable contraceptives can be used while breastfeeding. During this period, only those containing progestin-only formulations are recommended, and always after a medical consultation.
  • It’s true that contraceptive injections can cause mild discomfort or pain, especially if the solution is oil-based. However, this discomfort is temporary and lasts only a short time.
  • It’s false that the body needs to “take a break” after using injectables for a while. These methods can be used continuously for as long as the woman wishes to remain protected.
  • In some cases, it’s true that injectables can cause changes in weight, which depend on each woman’s body. To minimize this, it’s recommended to have a medical consultation before starting the method.
