Oral contraceptives
When to request it?
The use of contraceptive methods should be considered from the moment a person decides to become sexually active or at any point during their sexual life. It’s important to schedule a family planning and contraception consultation to choose the method that best fits each individual’s needs.
Colombia’s Mandatory Health Plan (POS) includes the free provision of family planning methods — this should be verified directly with each EPS (Health Insurance Provider).
Keep in mind:
- It’s false that any contraceptive works for all women. The choice must be personalized and made in consultation with a healthcare professional after considering multiple factors.
- It’s true that birth control pills have multiple benefits. They can reduce the amount and intensity of menstrual bleeding, ease premenstrual syndrome, and even lower the risk of developing long-term conditions such as ovarian cancer.
- It’s true that birth control pills can sometimes decrease libido or sexual desire. This happens only in some users and is usually temporary.
- It’s false that long-term use of birth control pills causes infertility. Once discontinued, fertility returns shortly after — the effect is only temporary.
- It’s false that you need to take breaks after using birth control pills for long periods. The components of these pills don’t accumulate in the body, so their contraceptive effect stops once you stop taking them.
